Workout Without Gym: 10 Gym-Alternatives To Help Trim And Tone Your Body

No matter what your exercise goals might be, you don't always want to get your exercise in a gym. That's why we've come up with 10 alternatives that will help you get the exercise you need without ever heading to the gym.
1. Workout DVDs
There are a lot of really good exercise DVDs on the market that offer expert coaching for those that want to burn a few calories in aerobic exercise - all in your own living room or bedroom!
You can purchase a few different DVDs for variety, or check them out from your local library.
2. Resistance Bands
You may not have the money for a full set of free weights, but resistance bands are cheap, easy to use and offer a lot of different workout options.
They're also easy to toss in your carry-on bag, so you can take them with you easily if you travel a lot. You'll never have to worry about finding a gym out on the road when you can carry a whole workout along with you!
3. Kettlebell Workouts
Kettleballs are small weights with a handle on top that are used for "ballistic" type exercises, like jerks, swings and snatches. They are one of the best ways around to get resistance training and cardio at the same time, while burning an amazing 400 calories or so in a 30 minute workout.
4. Walking
There's nothing new about it, but sometimes the tried and true is the best way to go. Walking is a great way to not only lose weight, but to keep the weight off. Track your steps each day with a pedometer; burn more calories by wearing a weighted vest.
5. Sprinting
Looking to burn fat as quickly as possible? Do some sprints - they burn the fat like nobody's business!
And you can sprint anywhere you like - on grass, on a track, on a treadmill, with a jump rope - you can even do swim sprints. Just do your regular walk, jog or swim, and throw in five to eight flat out, hard-as-you-can-go sprints that last anywhere from 15-45 seconds. You'll burn up to triple the calories by doing so.
6. Line Dancing
So you don't like to exercise and want to find a fun way to get in shape? Why not go line dancing?
Not only will a 30 minute line dancing session burn as much as 350 calories, it's great cardio exercise. It also helps improve your stamina, balance, coordination and range of motion. And dancing is a great way to help lower your stress; even help with depression.
7. Pole Dancing
Here's one that will give you a full body workout while spicing up your sex life!
Pole dancing helps build great strength and muscular endurance as well as flexibility - and it's fantastic for building your confidence in yourself and in your body.
8. Kayaking
Get a great workout for your back, abdominals and arms, all the while burning as much as 450 calories in an hour. And it's a lot more fun than jogging on a treadmill!
9. Surfing
Surfing is one of the best full body workouts there is - just look at surfers' bodies if you need proof! Paddling out past the breakers burns tons of calories, and popping up (moving up to a standing position) helps develop all your core muscles. Once you're up on your feet, your thighs and calves get a solid workout.
10. Burpees
Need an exercise that doesn't need equipment but works you whole body with strength, cardio and flexibility? You need Burpees!
Also known as the squat thrust, the combination of squatting, push-ups and jumping works all your large muscle groups. It increases your strength, flexibility and gives cardio benefits. And there are plenty of variations you can add to adapt it to any fitness level.
